When you layer exposures to show what a single frame cannot — motion and stillness, sound and silence, the instant and the duration — the difficulty is not the technique itself but the decision of what to freeze and what to blur, and at what ratio. You proved this here: the bells are sharp because they are the sound source, the fabric blurs because it is the visual echo of that sound, and the feet blur because they are the percussion instrument in motion. This is what Ernst Haas built his entire colour-motion practice on — the layered frame that shows time itself, not just a moment in time. The transferable principle: multiple exposure is not about showing two things at once, it is about showing the relationship between two states — stillness and motion, presence and absence, the strike and the resonance. That decision — what to hold sharp and what to let dissolve — is what separates a technical experiment from a finished image.

“You made sound visible — the only multiple-exposure decision that holds both the frozen bells and the blurred motion without losing either.”

Your tonal execution is what earned the difficulty score here — the separation between sharp bells and blurred fabric without clipping either extreme. Do not lift the blacks or flatten the contrast. Limit edits to minor highlight recovery on the upper fabric layers to separate costume detail from motion blur, and slight sharpening on the bells only.

A very dark print — push the blacks until the floor disappears entirely and only the bells and the white motion streaks remain against pure void — transforms this from dance documentation into sound sculpture. Alternatively, invert to white-on-black line drawing in post — the bells become geometric nodes and the fabric becomes pure calligraphic gesture.
Decisive Moment has been your most persistent challenge. The moment you are capturing is close to the peak — but consistently arriving a fraction early or late. Start staying with subjects longer than feels comfortable. The frame you want comes after the obvious one.
