ckground stays quiet.
When the background is doing something extraordinary — golden water, storm light, smoke, fire — expose for that register and let the subject fall where it falls, even if it means losing detail. The harder call is always protecting what cannot be recovered in post, and backlit water at golden hour is one of those things. Salgado made this same exposure choice in the Serra Pelada mines — the smoke and dust were the story, the miners were the form. That principle applies here: the golden bokeh is the story, the Great Egret is the form that gives it scale and life.
What is working
Where it stops short
The same five, every time, on the same scale every evaluation uses.
2.5 separates your strongest dimension from your weakest. That gap is where the next evaluation is won.
Where this reading sits against every photograph the engine has read.
“You chose the water over the bird — exposed for the golden glow and let the subject fall to silhouette, which is the harder call and the one that makes this a chromatic event rathe”
Composition · Negative space
Standard edit · balanced
The golden water exposure is what earned the chromatic register here — do not lift the shadows on the bird or you lose the silhouette decision. Limit edits to slight sharpening on the wing edges and legs to hold the form clarity against the bokeh, and check for any dust spots in the golden field.
Creative edit · artistic
A monochrome conversion — the golden glow becomes a high-key white field and the bird becomes pure black form — transforms this from a colour event into a graphic study of shape and negative space.
Now open
The black leopard at Kabini has been active this season — sightings are clustering at the waterhole before 7am, and the reserve is open through August. This is one of the rarest melanistic leopard subjects in India, and your timing window is your strongest dimension right now. Dawn light through the forest canopy, unpredictable movement, restricted access — precisely the combination that pushes how difficult it was higher. Your next big score comes from being there at first light when the leopard is moving and the canopy is doing something with the shadows. Book the safari in advance — October and November are also strong for leopard, but this season the black leopard is showing up now.
Your Decisive Moment has been flat or declining. This is fixable — it is a waiting problem, not a seeing problem. You already know what to look for. The practice is standing still longer.
